Michigan is one of the top vacation destinations in America. Tourism pumps billions of dollars into the state's coffers each year, and is the second-largest chunk of the economy, after manufacturing. Michigan is made up of two large peninsulas, and is almost completely surrounded by water. Water is an important source of hydroelectric power, and is also attracts a lot of tourists (the water also gives Michigan a mild and fairly even climate).
The state is first in the nation for the production of red tart cherries, dry beans, blueberries, and pickling cucumbers. With 149 species of native fish and several introduced species, fish dishes are a big hit. A culinary student should have no problem fitting in here.
